BEDDING PLANTS FROM SEEDS

If you want to produce some summer bedding plants from seed, sowing should take place from mid-March onwards. These early sowings have to be carried out under protection, in a glasshouse or in a bright location inside, like on a window sil in the classroom or at home. Starting the seeds/seedlings under 'protection' will result in some well established seedlings  which can then be planted into a window box or in a garden bed once the final frosts of the winter are gone.

Later sowings in May can be carried out directly into the garden soil for mid-end of summer flowering.

 INSTRUCTIONS

1. Choose the seed you want to grow The seeds of Marigold,Calendula and Nasturtium are some of the easiest to grow and their large size makes them easy to handle. The larger seed can be sown individually into small containers ( yogurt catons)to avoid transplanting in step 6.
2. Containers and compost Use old butter or salad containers as seed tarys to sow the seed into and 3/4 fill with fresh seed/potting compost. Make sure compost is moist.
3. Follow instructions on the seed packet Some seeds can be surface sown while others ned to be covered by a thinlayer of compost so read the instructions for each seed type.
4. Cover container with plastic and place in a wram bright location. By covering the container with clear plastic the humidity levels and soil temerature will be increased encouraging faster germination.
5. Remove cover once seedlings appear. If you leave the cover on the seedlings will become too stretched and weak.

Keep compost evenly moist. Dont overwater and don't let the seedlings dry out.

6. Seperating, pricking out. After several weeks of growth you can seperate the seedlings and replant into individual containers.

Water well after transplanting to avoid a 'check' in their growth.

7. Planting out Once the frost has gone by mid-May these plants can then be planted into a garden bed or used in planting up window boxes, hanging baskets..etc
